ANC secretary general commends South African democracy after slim 2024 election triumph

Fikile Mbalula, the secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC), has commended South African voters for showcasing the strength and vibrancy of the nation’s democracy during the just ended elections.

Mbalula was speaking to the media from the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s Results Operation Centre (ROC).

“The ANC thanks all those who voted for the party, (those) who showed confidence in our concerted efforts to get our country back on a path to prosperity for all and for supporting our efforts to rid the ANC of corrupt elements as part of our renewal process,” Mbalula said.

Acknowledging the ANC’s electoral success, Mbalula highlighted the party’s victory in securing the most votes nationwide and achieving a decisive majority in six provinces. He emphasised the ANC’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by voters and pledged to continue the party’s efforts towards renewal and revitalisation.

“While the ANC has won the most votes in this election, the results show a significant decline in ANC support from previous elections,” Mbalula admitted.

“The election results show that we need to intensify and accelerate the fundamental renewal of our movement. On this matter, on the renewal and rebuilding of our movement, we will not compromise.”

Mbalula further stressed the ANC’s commitment to improving governance and service delivery, stating, “We enter a new term with both a clear mandate and a firm commitment to improve the maintenance of infrastructure and the provision of services in communities throughout the country”.

Looking ahead, Mbalula outlined the ANC’s plans to establish national and provincial governments that reflect the will of the people and reiterated the party’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and respecting democratic principles.

In conclusion, Mbalula expressed gratitude to all voters for their participation in the democratic process and thanked the electoral commission, election workers, party agents, observers, security personnel, and the media for their contributions to the successful conduct of the elections.

“As we have done since the formation of our movement more than 112 years,” Mbalula affirmed, “the African National Congress will put the interests and the well-being of South Africans first,” Mbalula said.
