Mpumalanga, Limpopo also experienced floods

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Several parts of Johannesburg and neighbouring provinces experienced severe flooding on Friday, as heavy downpours continued throughout the day. The South African Weather Service issued a warning for flash floods and possible hailstorms in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.
Floods disrupted traffic and destroyed infrastructure
The flooding caused major disruptions to traffic, infrastructure, and services, as roads, bridges, and buildings were submerged or damaged by the rising water levels. Emergency services responded to numerous incidents of stranded motorists, collapsed structures, and power outages. Some residents were forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in safer areas.
The City of Johannesburg urged residents to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas, as well as to report any emergencies to the relevant authorities. The city also said it was working with other stakeholders to assess the extent of the damage and provide relief to the affected communities.

Rains to ease on Saturday but risk of floods remains high
The weather service said the rainfall was expected to ease by Saturday, but warned that the risk of flooding remained high, especially in areas along the rivers and dams. It advised the public to monitor the weather updates and follow the safety precautions.
Meanwhile, in KwaZulu Natal floods killed 23 people last weekend with some still missing.
