VOTING on the no confidence motion against Lesotho’s Prime Minister Sam Matakane was on Monday halted after a Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) legislator, Lejone Puseletso, filed a Constitutional Court application to interdict the proceedings.
Puseletso, who is the ruling RFP’s legislator for Thaba Moea constituency, rushed to court seeking an order to bar the National Assembly from dealing with the motion.
Puseletso’s application forced the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tlohang Sekhamane, to adjourn the parliamentary proceedings sine die pending the finalisation of the constitutional litigation.
Meanwhile, 64 members of parliament, including those from RFP had, before the 2:30pm parliament sitting, pronounced that they would vote in support of the no confidence motion which was filed by one of the opposition party leaders, Machesetsa Mofomobe of the Basotho National Party (BNP). This means that if it was not for the urgent court application, then it was likely that the one-year-old government would have collapsed if all 64 had voted for the motion.
