South Africa – In a recent media statement, the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) has underscored the urgent need for collaborative action to address the ongoing logistics crisis gripping the nation. Describing the situation as a ‘perfect storm’ that is throttling private sector activities and trade, SAAFF emphasises the critical importance of rectifying the situation to prevent further damage to the economy.

The statistics paint a stark picture: imports and exports in 2023 accounted for 56.22% of South Africa’s total GDP, representing a significant drop from the previous year. Against the backdrop of a booming mineral resources sector, this decline has dealt a severe blow to trade growth, reversing the gains made in 2022 following the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scale of the crisis is staggering, with inefficiencies in rail and port operations costing the country billions of rands daily. Recognising the magnitude of the problem, SAAFF issued an urgent call to the government last year for wholesale reform and corrective action to address the crisis in the logistics sector.

In response, the government established the National Logistics Crisis Committee (NLCC), signalling a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to stabilise supply chains. Through the NLCC, the private sector now has regular access to a specialist logistics consultative platform, facilitating discussions on key issues and driving accountability in the quest for sustainable solutions.

Positive developments are already underway, with Transnet’s recovery plan at Pier 2, the country’s largest container terminal, set to clear backlogs by the end of February 2024. Moreover, the approval and activation of the Freight Logistics Roadmap by the Cabinet provide a roadmap for the revival of a world-class logistics network for South Africa and the region.

Looking ahead, SAAFF emphasises the importance of well-managed Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP) to shape the logistics landscape and stimulate job creation. With logistics serving as the beating heart of the national economy, the success of these collaborative efforts is crucial for driving trade, commerce, and economic growth.

While challenges remain, there is optimism that South Africa can overcome its current predicament and emerge as a leader in the global supply chain. With concerted action and unwavering commitment from all stakeholders, the nation stands poised to navigate this crisis and chart a course towards a brighter future.
