HARARE, Zimbabwe – On the occasion of Zimbabwe’s Independence Day, Sengezo Tshabangu, a senator and member who is interim Secretary General of the CCC (Citizens’ Coalition for Change), shared his insights on the nation’s progress, challenges, and the path forward. In an exclusive interview, Senator Tshabangu addressed critical issues affecting Zimbabwean citizens and emphasised the need for collective action.

Reflecting on Independence

When asked about the significance of Independence Day, Senator Tshabangu said: “This day represents the hard-fought victory against imperialism and discrimination”.

“Our flag, national anthem, and national events should transcend partisanship. Those who fought for independence were united by a common purpose – to build a nation where every citizen thrives.”

Challenges and Priorities

Senator Tshabangu outlined key areas that demand urgent attention:

  1. Economy, Employment, and Education: The senator stressed the importance of economic stability, job creation, and quality education. “We must invest in our youth,” he asserted. “They hold the future, and their success depends on accessible education and employment opportunities.”
  2. Health Delivery and Social Safety Nets: Senator Tshabangu highlighted the need for robust healthcare systems and social safety nets. “Our citizens deserve quality healthcare,” he stated. “We must protect the vulnerable and ensure their well-being.”
  3. National Infrastructure and Security: “Infrastructure development is crucial,” Senator Tshabangu said. “Our roads, utilities, and communication networks must support growth. Additionally, national security ensures stability and progress.”
  4. Democracy and Legislation: “We need legislation that aligns with our citizens’ needs,” he said. “Oversight ensures effective implementation of national programmes.”

Youth Empowerment

“Youths will never be truly free until they break the chains of unemployment, lack of belonging, and limited ownership. Independence was just the beginning; the road ahead remains challenging.”

He called for inclusivity, urging Zimbabwean youths to actively participate in shaping the nation. “Our resources are abundant,” he added. “We must utilize them wisely to improve lives.”

Diaspora and National Identity

“While independence allowed Zimbabweans to explore the world, we must also create opportunities at home,” he said. “Our youth should feel a sense of belonging here.”

He cited Botswana’s success with diamond resources and challenged Zimbabwe to leverage its mineral wealth. “We can thrive only if we unite, invest in our people, and build a prosperous future.”

As Zimbabwe commemorates its independence, Tshabangu’s words serve as a call to action. The challenges are real, but so is the resilience of the Zimbabweans. Together, citizens can forge a brighter path toward prosperity and inclusivity, he said.
