JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele (MP), made waves at the AI Government Summit with a historic announcement that propels South Africa into the forefront of AI innovation.

Surrounded by a distinguished audience of industry leaders, policymakers, and academia, Minister Gungubele unveiled the Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (DAIRU) at the South African Military Academy in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

The summit, which marked a watershed moment in South Africa’s technological trajectory, showcased the country’s commitment to leveraging AI for both societal advancement and national security. Minister Gungubele’s announcement of the formation DAIRU, the first AI hub dedicated to the defence and military sector on the African continent, underscored South Africa’s proactive stance in embracing cutting-edge technologies.

In collaboration with the Department of Defence and Military Veterans, Minister Gungubele’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies spearheaded the establishment of DAIRU. The unit’s mission is ambitious yet critical: to harness the transformative power of AI to enhance South Africa’s defence capabilities, ensuring the country remains at the vanguard of technological innovation in the military sphere.

“The launch of the Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Unit is more than just a bureaucratic formality; it represents a strategic leap into the future,” Minister Gungubele declared.
“As a democratic state, we recognise the pivotal role that AI plays in driving socio-economic development and safeguarding our nation’s security.”

Minister Gungubele’s announcement comes amid increasing recognition of AI’s pivotal role in modern warfare.

“Emerging technologies, including AI, have become the focal points of geopolitical competition,” he noted.

“Nations like China, Russia, and the US are aggressively exploring the military applications of AI, and South Africa must not lag behind.”
Indeed, the rapid pace of technological innovation, coupled with the rise of Asia as a global trade hub, necessitates a re-evaluation of national security strategies. Minister Gungubele emphasized AI’s potential to redefine modern militaries and reshape the global balance of power.

While acknowledging AI’s immense potential, Minister Gungubele also underscored the importance of proactive governance to mitigate potential risks.

“As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into the world’s militaries, establishing clear guidelines and risk-reduction measures will be crucial to ensure global peace and security,” he remarked.
The minister highlighted the exponential rise of AI in military applications and its impact on weapon systems development, precision enhancement, and decision-making processes in the military. He stressed the importance of aligning defence policies with technological advancements to stay ahead in an era of rapid change.
