South African Tourism's Sho't Left Campaign: A Journey of Rediscovery

Nomazulu Moyo

DURBAN, South Africa – A desire to explore and discover grips you as you go around the stands during the corridors of The Africa Travel Indaba and the Sho’t Left booth stands out.

Mashoto Mokgethi, the Hub Head of South African Tourism, stands proudly at the Sho’t Left campaign booth—a campaign that has been a beacon for domestic travel for over two decades.

With the addition of the ‘It’s your country, enjoy it’ initiative five years ago, the message has only grown stronger.

“Our campaigns are crafted to inspire our trade partners to offer the best deals possible,” Mokgethi shares with a smile. “We want to show that travel is within reach for every South African, hence our mantra, ‘it’s your country, enjoy it.'”

The campaign is set to launch a week-long event from 2 to 8 September, offering deals that echo the excitement of Black Friday, with discounts of up to 50%.

The initiative is designed to make travel more accessible, allowing locals to enjoy the splendors of their country without breaking the bank.

The Sho’t Left campaign is a celebration of South Africa in its entirety—every province, township, and village. It’s an invitation to South Africans to become tourists in their own land, to experience the rich tapestry of cultures and landscapes that make up their nation.

Statistics speak volumes about the campaign’s success, with domestic tourism showing a 38% increase from last year and a remarkable 150% growth compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019.

“The Africa Travel Indaba isn’t just an event; it’s a catalyst for growth,” Mokgethi opines.

“Here, we meet new places to promote, new experiences to offer, and new products that will enhance the travel experience. It’s the best of what South Africa has to offer, all under one roof.”

As the Sho’t Left campaign continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of travel and the endless possibilities that await within the borders of South Africa.
