MASERU, Lesotho – Standard Lesotho Bank, the kingdom’s largest bank, has launched its 17th branch in Maseru. The Cathedral branch has added to the bank’s impressive network that already covered the entire country.

Emmanuel Maluke Letete, the governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho, who was the guest of honour at the official opening on Friday morning, said he was delighted that Standard Lesotho Bank was investing towards widening its network to “reach more Basotho”.

CBL governor encourages branch staff to develop service culture

He implored Standard Lesotho Bank staff to develop a service culture that would ensure seamless services were delivered to the banking public.

In his conversations with Anthony Nicolaisen, the Standard Lesotho Bank’s CEO, he always told him that as bankers, they were in the service industry and ought to serve their clients.

“I always say, how do we serve our clients? We must accept that we are there to serve. It’s not our money,” Dr Letete said.

It was surprising that some banking staff ended up being arrogant and “I want you (Standard Lesotho Bank staff) to take cognisance that the customer is always right. We must have that service mentality. We must cultivate a service mentality”.

MCC must match branch environs in terms of cleanliness

While the new facility was clean, it was disheartening that just across the road, there was litter everywhere, therefore, the local authorities must wake up and do their jobs.

“I also call on the government to ensure that services to our people are provided in the best way possible. I can see it is clean here. But across the road it’s a different story. Whoever is responsible must do their job,” Dr Letete said.

Nicolaisen expressed gratitude to Dr Letete and other guests and said Standard Lesotho Bank was working hard to become a trusted financial partner.

Personal banking tailored just for you

“(We are working to) to provide innovative financial services to Lesotho. It’s about our customers having first class services. We understand that we play a key role in financial inclusion,” Nicolaisen said.

He said he was proud that the newly opened branch was constructed by Basotho contractors. The same happened with the Qacha’s Nek branch which was opened last year. Similarly, they were planning to do the same with the Leribe branch to be officially opened later this year.

Branch outlook improvement a commitment to enhancing banking services

“We are improving our infrastructure to show our commitment to enhancing banking services,” Nicolaisen said.

Head Personal and Private Banking, Rethabile Motsoahae, said despite having the widest network, Standard Lesotho Bank was not complacent. They were invested towards ensuring that their facilities at all branches remained in a premium state.

“I want to urge out staff to protect that branch and keep it in this good state. To our clients, use this branch and be protective of it,” Motsoahae said.

Among other facilities available at the bank are cash deposit automated teller machines as well as bulk deposit machines. The cash deposit ATMs set Standard Lesotho Bank apart from its peers as its clients can now access the services at multiple branches.
