International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies speak on spread of Cholera in Zimbabwe

GENEVA, Switzerland – Zimbabwe is facing a severe cholera outbreak, with over 200 suspected new cases daily, escalating fears and prompting urgent calls for action. The first case, reported almost a year ago in Chegutu, 100 kilometres southwest of Harare, has since seen the disease spread to all ten provinces of the country.

The recent holiday season exacerbated the situation, with increased travel and gatherings leading to a significant rise in infections. John Roche, Head of Delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Harare, expressed grave concerns. “The post-holiday surge in cases confirms our worst fears. Vulnerable populations are at high risk and need immediate assistance,” he said.

Urgent Action Required

Cholera, known for its rapid spread through contaminated food or water, leads to severe dehydration due to diarrhea and vomiting, often resulting in fatalities. The outbreak’s gravity is further heightened by poor hygiene and living conditions in densely populated areas like Harare, which has declared a state of emergency.

The dilapidated state of the country’s sewage and water infrastructure exacerbates the problem, with frequent sewage blockages and challenges in accessing clean water for basic needs.

Red Cross Mobilization

In response, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) volunteers and aid workers have been tirelessly working to control the spread and provide patient care. Community outreach has been pivotal, with volunteers educating over 171,000 people on prevention and response measures. Additionally, the ZRCS is aiding the Ministry of Health in establishing Cholera Treatment Centers and has set up nine Oral Rehydration Points across the country.

A key component of the response is the community feedback mechanism, which includes meetings and suggestion boxes at health facilities. This initiative ensures that community voices are heard and addressed.

Funding and Support Needed

The IFRC’s Disaster Response Emergency Fund initially allocated around 500,000 Swiss Francs in June 2023, but more funds are critically needed to combat the rapidly spreading disease. The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 3 million Swiss Francs to support the ZRCS in reaching over 550,000 people with life-saving assistance and to contain the outbreak.

“This support is vitally needed to combat cholera and help ensure that no more lives are lost to this disease,” emphasized Roche. The IFRC and its members are urging the global community to contribute towards this crucial cause.
